THE MALDIVES

Maldives

Island life, wild encounters & extraordinary water.

More than just paradise.

We stayed at The One&Only Reethi Rah, and from the moment we arrived the island felt like somewhere completely removed from everyday life. The bungalow was nothing short of sublime, but it was the life outside it that made the stay so memorable.

We spent our days riding bicycles around the island, watching sharks and rays moving through the water and diving in some spectacular sites. I also seemed to spend an unreasonable amount of time chasing flying foxes and herons around the island with a camera.

There is something wonderfully simple about the rhythm of Reethi Rah — bikes, beaches, extraordinary marine life and water that constantly makes you want to get back in it.

November – April

The dry season generally brings the clearest skies, calmer seas and the conditions that make the Maldives particularly special.

One island

Reethi Rah is a private island where the days quickly settle into a rhythm of bicycles, beaches, water and wildlife.

By bicycle

Bicycles became part of the experience. Riding around the island was one of our favourite ways to explore and discover what was happening beyond the beach.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS

What made it special.

01

The One&Only Reethi Rah

Our base for the trip and an extraordinary place to stay. The bungalow was nothing short of sublime and the island gave us plenty of reasons to spend our days outside it.

02

Ride the island

Take a bicycle and explore. It is one of the simplest pleasures of Reethi Rah and a great way to discover the different corners of the island.

03

Watch the wildlife

Flying foxes and herons became unexpected characters in our days. There was always something moving through the trees, along the beach or around the water.

04

Get in the water

Sharks and rays could be seen moving through the water around the island. It was one of those places where even an ordinary swim could turn into an encounter worth remembering.

05

Go diving

The diving was spectacular. The underwater world adds another dimension to the Maldives and was one of the highlights of the trip for us.

06

Leave some time unplanned

The beauty of a place like Reethi Rah is that there is very little need to fill every hour. Some of our favourite moments came simply from getting on a bike and seeing where the island took us.

Life on Reethi Rah.

The Maldives is easy to reduce to photographs of beaches and turquoise water. But what stayed with us was the life around the island — the bicycles, the wildlife and the feeling that there was always something happening just beyond the bungalow.

I seemed to spend as much time looking into the trees for flying foxes and herons as I did looking out to sea. Add the sharks, rays and extraordinary diving, and Reethi Rah became much more than a beautiful place to stay.

Maldives.

One island, extraordinary water and a destination that quickly became one of our favourite escapes from Singapore.
